What Does the “M” on an RSVP Card Actually Mean?

The letter “M” on an RSVP card is simply a traditional starting point for a courtesy title. A guest might turn it into “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or “Miss,” and then write their name. It was originally included because formal invitations once placed much greater emphasis on titles and proper forms of address. Rather than printing every possible title, invitation designers used the single letter as a convenient prompt.

Over time, however, social customs changed. Modern invitations are often less formal, and many people prefer to use their names without traditional titles. If the “M” format does not suit you, there is no reason to become confused or feel pressured to choose a particular title. You can generally write the title you prefer or simply provide your name, as long as your response clearly identifies the invited guest.

The “M” also has nothing to do with the other information sometimes requested on RSVP cards. It is not asking about your meal, the number of guests, or whether you are attending. Those questions are normally written separately and clearly. The main purpose of the RSVP is to tell the host who is responding and whether that person will attend, along with any additional information the host has requested.
